Biography
Representative Liz May
Elizabeth Marty May was born on January 1, 1961, in Belle Fourche, South Dakota. She is a Republican member of the South Dakota House of Representatives representing District 27, serving since January 12, 2021. She resides in Kyle, South Dakota, with her husband Avery and their two children, Bud and Mary Jo.
May is a businesswoman and community member who has worked in various professional capacities throughout her career. She is the owner of Kyle Grocery, which she has operated since 2005.
Education
May attended Oglala Lakota College and Tarrant County Junior College. She completed formal training through the Adjusting and Texas Property Casualty Insurance School, which provided her foundation for work as an insurance property adjuster.
Political Experience
May has served as a South Dakota State Representative for District 27 during two separate periods: from 2013 to 2019 and from 2021 to the present. Prior to her current tenure, she was defeated by Democrat Peri Pourier in 2018. She later successfully ran for another seat and succeeded Oglala Republican Steve Livermont in 2021.
During her legislative career, May served on several committees within the South Dakota House of Representatives, including the Commerce and Energy Committee, Education Committee, Taxation Committee, and Transportation Committee.
In 2020, May ran as a candidate for the United States House of Representatives from South Dakota's At-Large District.
Before entering electoral politics, May worked as a substitute teacher in Shannon County Schools from 1982 to 1989 and served as Secretary for the Women, Infants, and Children program with the South Dakota Department of Health.
