Biography

Liz Krueger is a Democrat/Working Families member of the New York State Senate representing District 28 on Manhattan's East Side. Born on November 20, 1957, in Ridgewood, New Jersey, she has served since winning a special election in February 2002. She currently chairs the Senate Finance Committee and serves on committees including Elections, Higher Education, Housing, Construction and Community Development, Mental Health and Developmental Disabilities, and Rules. Notable achievements include founding co-chair of the New York State Bipartisan Legislative Pro-Choice Caucus, leadership in passing the Women’s Health and Wellness Act, advocacy for tenants’ rights, affordable housing, healthcare access, public education funding, environmental protection , and food assistance programs. She was honored as a 2025 Women of Distinction and New York State Senate Veterans' Hall of Fame honoree.

Education and Political Experience

  • Education: BS in Social Policy/Human Development from Northwestern University ; MA in Public Policy from Harris Graduate School of Public Policy, University of Chicago .
  • Pre-Political Career: Founding Director of the New York City Food Bank; Associate Director of the Community Food Resource Center , expanding access to food programs for low-income New Yorkers; earlier roles include Consultant to Food for Survival , Special Project Coordinator at Greater Cleveland Community Food Bank , and Researcher at University of Chicago's Children's Policy Research Project .
  • Political Experience: New York State Senator ; former chair of the Minority Task Force on Legislative and Budgetary Reform; previously ran for District 26 in 2000.
