Biography
Liz Hanbidge is a Democratic member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives, representing the 61st Legislative District in Montgomery County, which includes parts of Whitpain Township, Lower Gwynedd Township, Upper Gwynedd Township, Towamencin Township, and North Wales Borough. Elected in 2018, she defeated longtime Republican incumbent Kate Harper and became the first Democrat to serve the district since its formation in 1969. A steadfast advocate for children, families, and seniors, she holds leadership roles as Vice Chair of the House Children & Youth Committee and the Southeastern Pennsylvania House Delegation. Her committee assignments include Agriculture & Rural Affairs, Judiciary, Children & Youth, Health, Local Government, and the Committee on Committees.
Notable achievements include sponsoring Act 40 of 2024, updating Pennsylvania’s “slayer statute” to prevent inheritance by those convicted of abusing older decedents; legislation preventing SLAPP lawsuits that suppress free speech; and laws requiring explicit consent for internal medical exams for teaching purposes. She has advanced child custody reforms, childcare public-private partnerships, maternal health improvements, and consumer protections. Hanbidge serves on Pennsylvania’s State Interagency Coordinating Council for early intervention services, the National Conference of State Legislatures’ Juvenile Justice Task Force , and was a 2022 Toll Fellow by the Council of State Governments.
Prior to politics, she practiced family law and child advocacy in Montgomery County as a court-appointed guardian and pro bono attorney for the Montgomery Child Advocacy Project. She teaches civics to sixth graders at Gwyn-Nor Elementary and East Norriton Middle School.
