Biography
Liz Berry is a Democratic member of the Washington House of Representatives, representing the 36th Legislative District , which includes Seattle neighborhoods such as Queen Anne, Phinney Ridge, Greenwood, South Lake Union, Belltown, Magnolia, and Ballard. Born in 1983 and raised in Arizona, she was elected in 2020 and assumed office on January 11, 2021. She lives in Queen Anne with her husband Michael, a small business owner, and their two children. Notable achievements include sponsoring legislation for guaranteed basic income pilots, the Washington Recycling and Packaging Act for bottle deposits and waste reduction, a 10-day firearm purchase waiting period, bans on high-capacity magazines, and benefits for Uber/Lyft drivers; she also advocates for PFAS removal from firefighting gear. Berry serves as Chair of the Labor & Workplace Standards Committee, and is a member of the Environment & Energy, Transportation, Consumer Protection & Business committees, and the Legislative Committee on Economic Development and International Relations. She is national co-chair of Legislators for Safer Communities and a board trustee of ArtsFund.
Education and Political Experience
Berry studied at American University in Washington, D.C., with internships abroad in Namibia, South Africa, and Belgium, including for the first woman Mayor of Cape Town and at the U.S. Embassy in Brussels. Her political career includes working for U.S. Representative Gabby Giffords from 2007 to 2010 as legislative director, experiencing the 2011 shooting that killed colleague Gabe Zimmerman; executive director of the Washington State Association for Justice ; president of the National Women’s Political Caucus of Washington; and board member for NARAL Pro-Choice Washington.
