Biography
Lisa Stone Barnes is a Republican state senator representing District 11 in the North Carolina Senate, which includes Franklin, Nash, and Vance counties. A Nash County native and businesswoman in agribusiness, she has served three terms in the Senate after one term in the North Carolina House of Representatives and six years on the Nash County Board of Commissioners. Elected to the House in 2018, she ran for and won the Senate seat in 2020 by defeating former Senator Allen Wellons by a ten-point margin. Barnes focuses on promoting quality of life, low taxes, conservative leadership, and practical solutions for constituents.
Education and Political Experience
- Education: Graduated from Southern Nash High School; Associate of Arts from Peace College; Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from North Carolina State University; completed the Legal Assistants Program at Meredith College; graduate of UNC School of Government’s Advanced Leadership Corps program.
- Early Career: Worked as a real estate paralegal and in the Rocky Mount Planning and Development Department.
- Political Experience: Nash County Board of Commissioners ; North Carolina House ; North Carolina Senate, District 11 .
- Personal: Married to Johnny Barnes for over 35 years; three children ; one grandchild ; active in Ridgecrest Worship Center.
