Biography
Representative Lindsey Prather
Lindsey Prather is a Democratic representative serving North Carolina House District 115, representing southwestern Buncombe County. She was raised in Wake County and has lived in Buncombe County for over 16 years. Prather is married to Eric and resides in Candler with their dog Maeby. She has a twin sister Rachel, who teaches high school in Wake Forest, and an older brother Nick who works in the Triangle area.
Education and Political Experience
Prather attended the University of North Carolina at Asheville as a recipient of the NC Teaching Fellows scholarship, where she earned a bachelor's degree in Sociology along with teaching licenses in Social Studies and Special Education. She later earned a Master's degree in Public Affairs from Western Carolina University.
Before entering the legislature, Prather spent six years as an educator in Buncombe County Schools, teaching Special Education, Civics, and U.S. History at Erwin High School and Middle College. She was deeply involved in local Democratic Party activities, serving as precinct chair, cluster leader, and on boards for the Democratic Women, Young Democrats, and Teen Democrats.
Notable Achievements and Current Positions
Prather was elected to the North Carolina House of Representatives in November 2022 with 57.6% of the vote. She currently works part-time as Assistant Director of Admissions at UNC Asheville, assisting transfer students and veterans.
Her legislative priorities include education and healthcare advocacy. She serves on committees including Appropriations, Appropriations—Education, Education—Community Colleges, Education—Universities, and Local Government.
Notable legislative achievements include serving as primary sponsor of HB 1001 , HB 670 , the 2023 Safe Drinking Water Act, the Pollinator Protection Act, and HB 89 for Clean Energy Grants. She has received endorsements from Planned Parenthood, Sierra Club, EMILYs List, League of Conservation Voters, and other organizations focused on reproductive rights, environmental protection, and progressive causes.
