Biography
Laurie Sweet
Laurie Sweet is an American politician and member of the Connecticut House of Representatives representing the 91st district, which consists of parts of Hamden. She assumed office on January 8, 2025, after winning the general election on November 5, 2024, unopposed on the Democratic line with 7,921 votes and on the Working Families Party line with 779 votes.
Before entering the state legislature, Sweet served on the Hamden Legislative Council, to which she was elected in 2021 and re-elected in 2023. During her tenure on the council, she served as chair of the education committee and vice chair of the sustainability committee.
Education
Sweet holds advanced degrees in classical art history. She earned a bachelor's degree from Bryn Mawr College in 2002, a graduate degree from New York University in 2004, and a Ph.D. in Greek and Roman Art from The Ohio State University in 2009.
Political Experience
Following her doctorate, Sweet began her professional career as an adjunct professor at Ithaca College before relocating to Connecticut in 2011. She then trained and worked as a birth doula for seven years, supporting expectant families throughout the state.
In the Connecticut House of Representatives, Sweet was assigned to the Environment, Higher Education and Housing committees upon her swearing-in. She was also named Vice Chair of the newly formed bipartisan End Homelessness Caucus. As a representative, she is responsible for advocating for the interests of her constituents, participating in the legislative process, and serving on committees relevant to her district's needs.
