Biography
Laura Murphy is a Democratic Illinois State Senator representing the 28th District, which includes all or parts of Arlington Heights, Bloomingdale, Des Plaines, Elk Grove Village, Glenview, Hanover Park, Hoffman Estates, Mount Prospect, Niles, Park Ridge, Rolling Meadows, Roselle, Rosemont, Schaumburg, and areas neighboring O’Hare International Airport. Born into a middle-class family in Park Ridge, she has a working-class background and emphasizes government support for education, public safety, and fighting corruption. Notable achievements include securing over $80 million for Rebuild Illinois infrastructure projects in her district, championing a law requiring schools to establish emergency evacuation plans, serving as Deputy Majority Leader and Assistant Majority Leader , and chairing the Committee on Executive Appointments while serving on committees such as Appropriations, Assignments, Consumer Protection, Executive, Firearms, Government Operations, Local Government, Tobacco, and Transportation.
Education and Political Experience
- Education: Earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from Illinois State University.
- Political Experience: Spent over 20 years as an active member of the Des Plaines community, including eight years as alderman for the city’s 3rd Ward. Appointed to the Illinois State Senate in 2015 to represent the 28th District.
