Latrice M. Walker
Latrice Monique Walker is a Democratic New York State Assemblywoman representing the 55th Assembly District, which includes parts of Crown Heights, Brownsville, Bed-Stuy, and Ocean Hill in Brooklyn. Born and raised in Brownsville, Brooklyn on August 13, 1979, Walker has dedicated her career to public service and community advocacy.
Before entering electoral politics, Walker worked as a practicing attorney, representing tenants facing eviction and defending young minority victims of the NYPD's stop-and-frisk practices. She served as counsel to U.S. Representative Yvette D. Clarke from 2007 onward, where she focused on criminal justice, affordable housing, and community development initiatives.
Walker was elected to the New York State Assembly in 2014 to fill a vacant seat and took office in 2015. She remains active in community affairs and is a member of Wayside Baptist Church and the New York City Bar Association.
Education
Walker received her early childhood and secondary education through the New York City public school system. She earned her undergraduate degree from Purchase College, where she double-majored in Sociology and Political Science. She completed her Juris Doctorate from Pace University School of Law and was admitted to the New York State Bar in 2007.
Political Experience and Notable Achievements
Walker chairs the Assembly's Election Law Committee and serves as a member of the Housing, Judiciary, Codes, and Ways and Means Committees. She is recognized as a leading voice on voting rights, criminal justice reform, environmental justice, affordable housing, and tenants' rights.
Her most significant legislative achievement is her role as the primary architect of the 2019 bail reform law, which eliminated cash bail for most misdemeanors and non-violent felonies. She was also the Assembly sponsor of the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Act of New York and a co-sponsor of the Clean Slate Act, both signed into law. Additionally, she authored legislation expanding access to prenatal care in New York State.
