Biography
LaTonya Johnson is a Democratic state senator representing Wisconsin's 6th Senate District, which includes residential, urban, and downtown Milwaukee, as well as the southeast part of Wauwatosa. Elected to the Senate in 2016, she previously served in the 17th Assembly District from 2012 to 2016. A Milwaukee resident for over 30 years, she is a strong advocate for workers and working families, having served as President of AFSCME Local 502 , an Executive Board member for AFSCME District Council 48, and Chair of AFSCME's Women Committee. Before entering politics, she owned and operated a licensed in-home childcare service and worked as a Financial Employment Planner for Wisconsin Shares.
Notable achievements include passing over a dozen bills into law as a member of the minority party. She is a graduate of Emerge Wisconsin Class of 2012 and holds leadership roles such as co-chair of the bipartisan Wisconsin Legislative Children's Caucus, member of the Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention Board, member of the Milwaukee Child Welfare Partnership Council, advisory member of the UW Health Population Institute and Family Impact Seminar, and founding leader of Policymakers for Peace.
