Biography
Larry Collins Stutts is a Republican member of the Alabama State Senate representing District 6, which includes Colbert, Franklin, Lawrence, Limestone, Marion, and Lauderdale counties. Born in May 1954 in Sheffield, Alabama, he is a physician specializing in obstetrics and gynecology , having delivered over 10,000 babies, and resides in Tuscumbia with his wife Jackie, a pharmacist, and their four children: Elizabeth, Rebecca, Sarah, and Collins. A Presbyterian elder and Sunday school teacher, as well as a cattle farmer, Stutts was first elected in 2014, narrowly defeating long-time Democratic incumbent Roger Bedford Jr. by about 70 votes after a recount, campaigning on conservative principles including reducing government size, protecting the right to life, Second Amendment rights, and keeping taxes low. Notable positions include Chair of the Children, Youth, and Human Services Committee and Vice Chair of the Healthcare Committee; he has also served on committees such as Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry, Education Policy, Finance and Taxation, and Judiciary.
Education and Political Experience
- Education: Earned a DVM in Veterinary Medicine from Auburn University ; MD from the University of South Alabama College of Medicine; completed residency and served as Chief Resident at Carraway Medical Center; former professor at Northwest Shoals Community College.
- Professional Experience: Owner of Colbert Obstetrics and Gynecology since 1992.
- Political Experience: Assumed office as Alabama State Senator for District 6 on November 5, 2014 ; active in student government and leadership roles at Auburn University; represented his high school at American Legion Boys' State.
