Biography

Larry Bucshon represented Indiana's 8th congressional district from 2011 to 2025. A former cardiothoracic surgeon, he was a senior member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, vice chair of its Health Subcommittee, and vice chair of the House GOP Doctors Caucus. Notable achievements include leading efforts on patient-centered health care reforms, combating the opioid epidemic , advocating for transportation projects like Interstate 69, and promoting an all-of-the-above energy policy.

Education and Political Experience

  • Education: Born May 31, 1962, in Kincaid, Illinois; attended medical school, completed residency and served as chief resident in surgery at the Medical College of Wisconsin, followed by a cardiothoracic surgery fellowship there. Board certified in cardiothoracic surgery by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery.
  • Early Career: Served nearly a decade in the U.S. Navy Reserve; practiced as a cardiothoracic surgeon in Evansville, Indiana, performing hundreds of heart surgeries; served as President of Ohio Valley HeartCare, Chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery, and Medical Director of the open heart recovery ICU at St. Mary's Hospital ; honored as St. Mary's Medical Staff Physician of the Year in 2007.
  • Political Experience: Elected to Congress in 2010; served on House committees including Energy and Commerce, Transportation and Infrastructure, Education and the Workforce, and Science, Space, and Technology ; co-chaired the Congressional Kidney Caucus; member of the Republican Main Street Partnership. After retiring from Congress, joined Holland & Knight as a senior policy advisor on health care and energy.
