Biography
Lamont J. Robinson, Jr.
Lamont J. Robinson, Jr. was born on February 21, 1982, in Chicago, Illinois. A lifelong Chicagoan, Robinson has built a multifaceted career at the intersection of business, education, and public service. He is an accomplished businessman who founded and operated The Robinson & Caban Insurance Group. Robinson also served as an adjunct professor at Harold Washington College, teaching business, and directed the Kappa Leadership Institute, a program that prepares young men for college and professional success.
Robinson is openly gay and made history in 2018 as the first openly LGBTQ African-American person to serve in the Illinois legislature. He is committed to community development, serving on the Board of Quad Communities Development Corporation and the Urban League Metro Board.
Education
Robinson holds an undergraduate degree in business marketing from Clark Atlanta University and an MBA from National Louis University.
Political Experience
Robinson currently serves as Alderman of Chicago's 4th Ward, representing neighborhoods that include parts of Douglas, Kenwood, and Near South Side. He assumed office on May 15, 2023, after winning a crowded election following incumbent Sophia King's decision to pursue the mayoral race.
Prior to his aldermanic position, Robinson served in the Illinois House of Representatives from 2019 to 2023, representing the 5th District. His state house district encompassed all or parts of the Near North Side, Chicago Loop, Near South Side, Douglas, Grand Boulevard, and Greater Grand Crossing. During his tenure in Springfield, he championed critical investments in infrastructure, social services, and economic development.
Robinson is a member of the Democratic Party.
