Biography
Lammis J. Vargas is a Democratic state senator representing District 28 in the Rhode Island Senate, elected in November 2024 and serving since 2025. A lifelong Rhode Islander, cancer survivor, and daughter of Colombian immigrants, she grew up in Central Falls, lives in Cranston with her husband and two children, and is noted as the first woman of color elected to the Cranston City Council in 2018. Notable achievements include starting Cranston's first Pride Flag raising, championing accessible playgrounds and safe streets, increasing diversity on city boards and commissions, supporting public schools, advocating for environmentally friendly ordinances, and tightening cemetery care requirements; she currently serves as Secretary of the Senate Committee on Environment & Agriculture, and as a member of the Senate Committees on Finance, Labor & Gaming, and Artificial Intelligence & Emerging Technologies.
