Biography
Senator Kyra Hoffner
Kyra Hoffner is a Democratic Senator representing Delaware's 14th Senate District, which stretches from the Appoquinimink River to the Leipsic River and includes the communities of Townsend, Smyrna, Clayton, Cheswold, and Leipsic.
She was born and raised on Long Island, New York, as the daughter of a New York City police officer and a community advocate. In 2001, Hoffner and her family relocated to Delaware, where she started her career in the mortgage industry before retiring in 2008.
Political Experience
Hoffner entered public service as an advocate and volunteer coordinator for the Delaware Advocacy Network and as a lobbyist for the League of Women Voters. During her work with the League of Women Voters, she co-chaired the People Powered Fair Maps Redistricting Team, a partnership between more than a dozen organizations that conducted public education workshops across Delaware in 2021 to advocate for fair and transparent redistricting processes.
She was elected to the Delaware Senate in 2022 after winning a competitive five-way primary and a close general election contest to succeed Senator Bruce Ennis, who retired after four decades in the General Assembly.
Current Positions and Achievements
Senator Hoffner serves as Chair of the Legislative Oversight & Sunset Committee and holds vice-chair positions on the Corrections & Public Safety Committee and the Agriculture Committee. She is also a member of several other committees, including Veterans Affairs, Housing & Land Use, Elections & Government Affairs, Judiciary, and Special Property Reassessment.
Notable legislative work includes introducing Senate Bill 32, developed in collaboration with the Department of Correction and labor representatives, designed to balance support for public safety workers while maintaining transparency in state operations.
Hoffner is an active member of multiple advocacy organizations, including NORML, the NAACP, Network Delaware, the Sierra Club, Delaware United, Planned Parenthood, Delaware Stonewall, IAMME, and the ACLU Campaign for Smart Justice.
