Biography
Kimberley Lord Driscoll was born on August 12, 1966, and is an American politician and lawyer serving as the 73rd Lieutenant Governor of Massachusetts since January 5, 2023. A member of the Democratic Party, she was elected alongside Governor Maura Healey in 2022, making them the first all-women executive team to lead Massachusetts.
Education and Early Career
Driscoll earned her law degree from the Massachusetts School of Law. While in college, she worked in Salem's Planning Department, which sparked her interest in how government can positively impact people's daily lives. She later served as Beverly's Community Development Director before transitioning to private legal practice for several years.
Political Experience
Before becoming lieutenant governor, Driscoll held several significant positions:
- Chief Legal Counsel and Deputy City Manager of Chelsea : She was brought on to help the city regain fiscal solvency following bankruptcy in the early 1990s.
- Salem City Council Member: She served as an elected member of the city council.
- Mayor of Salem : She served as the 50th mayor for 17 years, building an extensive and successful career in local government.
In January 2022, Driscoll declared her candidacy for lieutenant governor. She won the endorsement of the Massachusetts Democratic Party at the state convention in June 2022 with 41.4 percent delegate support, won the Democratic primary, and defeated Republican Leah Cole Allen in the general election.
As Lieutenant Governor, she works with Governor Healey on economic growth, affordability, housing investments, and advancing clean energy and life sciences initiatives.
