Biography
Gregorio Kilili Camacho Sablan
Gregorio Kilili Camacho Sablan was born on January 19, 1955, in Saipan, the capital of the Northern Mariana Islands. He is the first and only delegate to represent the Northern Mariana Islands in the U.S. House of Representatives, having begun service on January 6, 2009. He is currently a member of the Democratic Party.
Sablan comes from a prominent political family and has been described as the most successful politician in Northern Mariana Islands history. He is married to Andrea and has six children, six grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
Education
Sablan attended multiple institutions of higher education, including the University of Guam, Armstrong University at Berkeley, and the University of Hawaii at Manoa.
Political Experience
Sablan's political career spans several decades:
- 1981-1986: Served in the United States Army
- 1982-1986: Served two terms as a Democrat in the Northern Mariana Islands Commonwealth Legislature
- 1986: Worked as a special assistant to U.S. Senator Daniel K. Inouye of Hawaii
- 1998-2008: Appointed as executive director of the Commonwealth Election Commission
- 2008-present: Elected as Delegate to the U.S. House of Representatives, winning eight consecutive Commonwealth-wide elections
- 116th Congress: Chaired the Subcommittee on Early Childhood, Elementary and Secondary Education of the House Committee on Education and Labor and served as Vice Chair for Insular Affairs on the House Committee on Natural Resources
