Biography
Senator Kevin Corbin
Senator Kevin Corbin is a Republican representing Senate District 50 in the North Carolina General Assembly. His district encompasses Cherokee, Clay, Graham, Haywood, Jackson, Macon, Swain, and Transylvania counties in Western North Carolina.
Born and raised in the scenic mountains of Macon County, Senator Corbin has devoted his career to public service in Western North Carolina. He is the founder and owner of The Corbin Insurance Agency, Inc., and the Blue Ridge Insurance Group, which provide insurance services in western North Carolina and upstate South Carolina. In 2010, he was appointed to the Blue Cross Blue Shield NC Agents Advisory Board and was inducted into the Blue Cross Blue Shield of NC Hall of Fame in 2013. He is an active member of the Franklin Rotary Club and currently serves as Chair of the Region A Council of NC Government.
Education and Political Experience
Corbin's public service began early when he was elected to the Macon County School Board at age 22. He served on the board for 20 years, serving as chairman for 16 of those years. During his tenure, he led a 25-year long-range plan to build new schools countywide at a cost of $300 million.
He later transitioned to local government, serving two terms on the Macon County Commission, where he also served as chairman from 2012 to 2016.
State House: Corbin was elected to the North Carolina House of Representatives in 2017, representing the 120th District. During his two terms , he served as Deputy Majority Whip and was appointed to key committees including Appropriations on Education/Higher Education, Commerce and Insurance, and Transportation.
State Senate: He was elected to the North Carolina Senate in 2020 and is currently in his third term. His tenure has been marked by significant legislative achievements, particularly in broadband expansion, education, and school safety. He chairs the Health Care Committee and previously chaired the State and Local Government Committee. He also serves on the Appropriations Committee on Health and Human Services and multiple joint legislative oversight committees.
A notable accomplishment of Senator Corbin is his instrumental role in the expansion of Medicaid in North Carolina, which extended coverage to 600,000 residents for the first time. As one of the first Republicans in the legislature to favor Medicaid expansion, his efforts helped the measure pass the Senate with an overwhelming bipartisan majority.
