Kenyatta Stewart

Kenyatta Stewart is a highly regarded attorney and community advocate from Paterson, New Jersey. He has built a career focused on public service, legal advocacy, and community empowerment.
In 2015, Stewart gained national recognition when he and five other Paterson residents brokered a truce between three rival street gangs, receiving coverage in The New York Times. Beyond this achievement, he has been deeply committed to voter education, civic participation, and mentoring youth throughout New Jersey. He is actively involved in speaking engagements at schools and correctional facilities across the state, advocating for voter rights and participating in voter registration drives.
Education
Stewart earned his Bachelor's degree in Political Science from William Paterson University and his Juris Doctor from Hofstra University School of Law.
Political Experience and Notable Positions
Corporation Counsel, City of Newark : Stewart serves as Newark's chief legal officer, leading a team of attorneys responsible for guiding New Jersey's largest municipality through complex legal, regulatory, and policy matters. Under his leadership, the Law Department has initiated civil actions against negligent landlords and property owners, including a significant complaint against the City of New York for relocating approximately 1,200 families to Newark without ensuring habitable conditions. He has also overseen legal counsel for Newark's progressive initiatives, including the establishment of New Jersey's first land bank, inclusionary zoning policies, cannabis regulation, and redevelopment projects.
Amistad Commission : Stewart was appointed by the New Jersey Assembly Speaker to promote and incorporate African American history into the state's educational curriculum.
Assembly Committee Memberships: Stewart serves as a member of the Judiciary, Health, and Appropriations committees.
Recognition and Honors: Stewart has earned national recognition for his contributions, including being named among the Top 100 Black Lawyers, recognized as a Young Trailblazer, and honored as a Rising Star by Super Lawyers Magazine.
