Biography

Representative Kenny Nguyen

Kenny Van Nguyen is a Democratic member of the Colorado House of Representatives representing House District 33, which encompasses Adams, Broomfield, and Weld counties. He is the first Vietnamese-American to serve in the Colorado General Assembly.

Nguyen was born in Colorado between 1994 and 1995 to Vietnamese refugee parents who fled the Vietnam War. He was raised in Colorado and is the first member of his family to earn a college degree. Nguyen has dedicated his career to public service, beginning with his work as an AmeriCorps Service Member for the Boulder "I Have a Dream" Foundation and as a community organizer for the Jared Polis for Governor campaign in 2018.

Prior to his appointment to the state legislature, Nguyen served as Executive Assistant to Colorado's Lieutenant Governor Dianne Primavera for over five years. In 2023, he was elected to the Broomfield City Council representing Ward 1 and previously chaired the Broomfield Arts, History, and Cultural Council. On January 12, 2026, he was appointed to the Colorado House of Representatives by a Democratic vacancy committee to replace Representative William Lindstedt, who had been appointed to the Colorado Senate.

Education

Nguyen holds a dual degree in Political Science and Communication from the University of Colorado Boulder. He recently completed his Master of Public Administration from the University of Colorado Denver, making him the first in his family to earn a graduate degree.

Political Experience

In the Colorado House, Nguyen serves on the State, Civic, Military & Veterans Affairs Committee and the Transportation, Housing & Local Government Committee. His policy interests include income-aligned housing and effective local governance. Additionally, he previously served as Vice Chair of the Colorado Democratic Party Asian American Pacific Islander Initiative, where he worked to expand voter turnout in the AAPI community, and as Secretary of the Broomfield Democratic Party.
