Biography
Kelvin Datcher is a Democratic member of the Alabama House of Representatives representing District 52, which covers parts of Birmingham, the University of Alabama at Birmingham, Fairfield, and Homewood in Jefferson County. A 54-year-old native of Vincent in Shelby County, he assumed office on October 2, 2024, after winning a special election to succeed longtime Rep. John Rogers, marking the district's first new representative since 1982. Married with three children, Datcher emphasizes priorities like affordable housing, public education, community development, healthcare access, and increased state investment in Birmingham.
Education and Political Experience
- Education: Earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from Gettysburg College in 1992.
- Professional Experience: Director of Teaching Tolerance at the Southern Poverty Law Center; sports information director at Alabama State University ; administrative/policy analyst for the Jefferson County Department of Health; chief of staff to Birmingham City Councilmember Sheila Tyson; director of development for REV Birmingham; deputy director of community development and senior advisor to Mayor Randall Woodfin for the City of Birmingham.
