Biography

Kelly Miller Alexander Jr. was a Democratic member of the North Carolina House of Representatives, representing District 107 from 2009 until his death. A longtime civil rights activist, he followed in his father Kelly Alexander Sr.'s footsteps as President of the North Carolina NAACP and served on its national board. Notable achievements include sponsoring legislation on criminal justice reform, anti-poverty measures, and rent control ; leading NAACP lawsuits for single-member districts to empower African American voters; cofounding UNC-Chapel Hill’s Project Uplift; and serving as the first African American on the Airport Advisory Committee . He was a proponent of economic justice, education, healthcare access, and preventing term limit expansions.

Education and Political Experience

  • Education: Bachelor of Arts in political science and Master of Public Administration from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill ; additional studies at Smith University, Queens University, and UNCC.
