Biography

Keith Self is a Republican representative for Texas's 3rd congressional district since 2023, currently serving his second term. A military veteran and former judge, he was born on March 20, 1953, in a military hospital during his father's U.S. Army service and was raised in Texas. He resides in McKinney, Texas, with his wife Tracy, to whom he has been married since graduating from West Point; they are active in their church and community. Notable achievements include cutting property taxes by 25% and reforming the pension system as Collin County Judge from 2007 to 2018, defending private property rights, and serving three terms. In Congress, he serves on the House Committees on Foreign Affairs and Veterans' Affairs, including subcommittees on Europe, Western Hemisphere, Disability Assistance and Memorial Affairs, and Technology Modernization. He recently introduced the SNAP Study Act of 2025.

Education and Political Experience

  • Education: Graduated from Amarillo High School; Bachelor of Science from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1975.
  • Military Service: Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Army , serving 25 years with Army Rangers and Special Forces; roles included Infantry Platoon Leader, Special Forces Detachment and Company Commander, and Executive Officer to a Major General in Egypt; deployments to Qatar, Egypt, Germany, Afghanistan, Belgium, Grenada, Bosnia, and Iraqi Freedom; awards include Master Parachutist Badge, Ranger Tab, and Special Forces Tab.
  • Political Experience: Elected Collin County Judge , winning three terms; ran for Texas's 3rd district in 2002 and won in 2022 after advancing in the primary runoff following incumbent Van Taylor's withdrawal; U.S. House Representative for Texas District 3 . Member of American Legion and Military Officers Association of America; board member for Prestonwood Pregnancy Center and The Samaritan Inn.
