Biography
Keith Powers is a Democrat representing New York State Assembly District 74 on Manhattan's East Side. A lifelong resident of Stuyvesant Town and Peter Cooper Village—where he was born, raised as a third-generation resident, and still lives—he previously served in the New York City Council since 2018. Notable achievements include leading office-to-housing conversions with a Midtown South rezoning, negotiating a 2019 rent reduction for Waterside Plaza seniors , winning a lawsuit to preserve rent stabilization in his community, and passing laws against housing discrimination and renter overcharges. He also authored legislation for electric vehicle fleet conversion, animal welfare protections, noise code strengthening, e-bike fire prevention, mental health bed expansion, and scaffolding reduction.
Education and Political Experience
- Education: Attended the University of Dayton and The CUNY Graduate Center.
- Political Experience: Recognized as New York City's top lawmaker in 2019 by City & State, Crain's 40 Under 40 honoree, CUNY Lindsey Fellow, and NewDEAL Leader. Elected to City Council in 2018; transitioned to Assembly District 74 following the 2025 open seat.
