Biography
Keith G. Kautz
Attorney General of Wyoming
Keith G. Kautz is a Wyoming native born in 1953, growing up in Goshen County. His hometown of Torrington is located within the Eighth Judicial District where he would later serve. Kautz is a long-time public servant with over three decades of experience in Wyoming's legal and judicial systems. He is a member of the Republican party and currently serves as Wyoming's 39th Attorney General, having assumed office on July 7, 2025, following his appointment by Governor Mark Gordon.
Kautz is married to Karen, with whom he celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in January 2025. The couple has 3 children and 9 grandchildren.
Education
Kautz received his B.S. with honors from the University of Wyoming in 1975 and graduated from the University of Wyoming College of Law in 1978.
Political Experience
Private Practice
Kautz began his legal career in private practice, working in both Torrington and Sheridan from 1979 until 1993. He served as a partner at the Torrington-based law firm of Sawyer, Warren & Kautz.
District Court Judge
From 1993 until 2015, Kautz served as a District Court Judge for Wyoming's Eighth Judicial District, covering Converse, Goshen, Niobrara, and Platte counties—a tenure of 22 years.
Wyoming Supreme Court Justice
In 2015, Governor Matt Mead appointed Kautz as a justice to the Wyoming Supreme Court. He was sworn in on August 4, 2015, and won a retention election in November 2016 with 77% of the vote. During his tenure on the Wyoming Supreme Court, Kautz wrote over 200 opinions for the Court and issued 34 dissents and specially concurring opinions. He also served as chair of Wyoming's Judicial Education program. Kautz was constitutionally required to retire from the bench at age 70, which he did on March 27, 2024.
Attorney General
In July 2025, Kautz returned to active practice and was appointed Attorney General of Wyoming by Governor Mark Gordon.
Additional Service
Throughout his career, Kautz has served on Wyoming's civil and criminal pattern jury instructions committees, the Wyoming State Bar's fees dispute committee, and served as chair of the Wyoming District Judges conference. He served for six years on the Wyoming Commission on Judicial Conduct and Ethics and has represented Wyoming on the Uniform Law Commission since 2003. The Wyoming State Bar honored Kautz with its Victims Services award and Leadership award.
