Biography
Kay Granger
Kay Granger is a Republican representative from Texas's 12th District in the United States House of Representatives. Born on January 18, 1943, in Greenville, Texas, she grew up in Fort Worth, where she has maintained deep community roots throughout her life and career.
Education
Granger attended Texas Wesleyan University in Fort Worth.
Political Experience
Granger began her political career in local government, serving on the Fort Worth City Council from 1989 to 1991. She then served as Mayor of Fort Worth from 1991 to 1995, where she achieved significant accomplishments including reducing crime by 49 percent and attracting new businesses to the city. Her tenure as mayor earned Fort Worth the prestigious All-American City award from the National Civic League.
In 1997, Granger was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, representing Texas's 12th District—a position she has held for nearly three decades. She was the first Republican woman from Texas to serve in the House. During her first year in Congress, she established herself as "a rising star of the freshman class" and introduced legislation requiring both the president and Congress to present certified balanced budgets. As a member of the House Budget Committee, she helped write the first balanced budget since 1969 and implemented the first tax cuts since 1981.
Throughout her congressional career, Granger has served on numerous significant committees, including the House Appropriations Committee and various appropriations subcommittees focused on Transportation, Military Construction, and Labor-Health and Human Services. In 2003, she served as an Assistant Majority Whip.
