Biography
Katie Stuart is a Democratic member of the Illinois House of Representatives representing the 112th district in the Metro East region, which includes all or parts of Bethalto, Caseyville, Collinsville, Edwardsville, Fairmont City, Fairview Heights, Glen Carbon, Granite City, Madison, Maryville, O'Fallon, Pontoon Beach, Roxana, Shiloh, Swansea, and Wood River. She assumed office on January 11, 2017, succeeding Dwight Kay, and serves as Assistant Majority Leader and Floor Whip. A resident of Edwardsville, Illinois, she lives with her husband Steve and their two children. Notable achievements include her leadership as Chair of the Higher Education Committee and Vice Chair of the Ethics & Elections Committee, along with her advocacy for middle-class families, education funding, and healthcare access.
Education and Political Experience
- Education: B.A. in Mathematics from Rutgers University; M.A. in Mathematics from Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville.
- Professional Background: Former public elementary and high school math teacher in Edwardsville and Highland; former college math instructor at Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville; member of the Illinois Educators Association with two decades of teaching experience.
- Political Experience: Elected to the Illinois House in 2017 and reelected in subsequent cycles, including as a candidate in 2022 and 2024; serves on committees including Appropriations-Higher Education, Elementary & Secondary Education: School Curriculum & Policies, Mental Health & Addiction, and Police & Fire.
