Biography

Katherine S. Kazarian is a Democratic member of the Rhode Island House of Representatives, representing District 63 since her election in November 2012 at age 22, making her the youngest state representative at the time. She serves as House Majority Whip, the third-highest leadership position, elected by her Democratic colleagues in January 2021. A lifelong East Providence resident and Armenian American, she previously worked in sales development and client success roles in tech startups, and in 2024 graduated cum laude from Roger Williams Law School, becoming licensed to practice in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and New York.

Notable achievements include sponsoring the "Let RI Vote Act" , expanding voter access with no-excuse mail ballots; mandating genocide and Holocaust education in schools; passing pay equity legislation addressing wage discrimination; requiring African American history in schools; banning certain military-style assault weapons ; allowing birth certificate modifications with culturally sensitive language ; mandating monthly Washington Bridge updates from RIDOT ; and enabling winery on-site sales . She received Common Cause RI's "Excellence in Public Service Award" in 2023 and serves on the House State Government and Elections, Rules, and Special Legislation Committees.

Education and Political Experience

  • Education: Attended Thompson Kindergarten Center, Myron J. Francis Elementary School, and St. Mary Academy-Bay View in East Providence. Earned a B.A. cum laude in Urban Studies and Economics from Barnard College, Columbia University . J.D. cum laude from Roger Williams Law School , with Law Review, Honors Program, and internships at Textron and U.S. District Court.
  • Political Experience: Elected in 2012 after winning a four-way Democratic primary; re-elected multiple times, including 2020. Inspired by President Obama's 2012 Barnard commencement speech to run. Focuses on public education, business development, voting rights, and equity. Volunteers as AYSO coach and Sunday School assistant in youth. Currently an attorney at CMBG3 Law while serving as state representative.
