Biography
Kathy Szeliga is a Republican member of the Maryland House of Delegates representing District 7A in Baltimore County. Born on October 10, 1961, in Baltimore, Maryland, she was raised in a military family, with her father serving as a lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army, including deployments to Korea and Vietnam. She worked blue-collar jobs before starting a construction contracting business with her husband Mark in 1986; they have been married for over 30 years and have two sons. Szeliga entered politics in the mid-1990s opposing the Maryland School Performance and Assessment Program, later serving as a legislative aide and chief of staff to state delegates and Senator Andy Harris. Elected in 2010, she has served since January 2011, previously in District 7 . Notable achievements include serving as House Minority Whip , the highest-ranking elected Republican woman in Maryland at the time; Republican nominee for U.S. Senate in 2016; founding member of the Maryland Freedom Caucus; Vice-Chair of the Maryland House Freedom Caucus ; and Chair of the St. Mary's County House Delegation .
