Biography
Kate McCann is a Democratic representative for Washington-4 in the Vermont House of Representatives, serving since 2023. A former math teacher from Montpelier, she has prioritized education and community involvement, including roles in teachers' unions and math education initiatives. Notable achievements include National Board certification in 2012, the Presidential Award for Excellence in Math and Science Teaching in 2015, Vermont State Teacher of the Year in 2017, and an Albert Einstein Distinguished Educators fellowship in 2018–2019, during which she worked as K–12 counsel for U.S. Congresswoman Marcia Fudge in Washington, DC.
Education and Political Experience
McCann taught math for six years in California before returning to Vermont in 2004 to start a family; she currently serves as the math state coordinator for the Presidential Award for Excellence in Math and Science Teaching. Active in the teachers’ union as chief negotiator, vice president, and current co-president, she has also served on the Vermont Council of Teachers of Mathematics board since 2011 and directed the first VCTM Statewide Math Fair in 2016. From 2019 to 2022, she was on Montpelier’s Transportation and Infrastructure Committee. Elected to the Vermont House in 2022, she continues to represent Washington-4 as of 2026.
