Biography

Kate Lalley

Kate Lalley is a Democratic state representative from Chittenden-6, representing Shelburne and South Burlington in Vermont. Originally from Washington, DC, she has resided in Shelburne since 2003. Throughout her tenure in Vermont, Lalley has been deeply involved in community service and planning initiatives focused on sustainable development and affordable housing.

Before her election to the Vermont House of Representatives in 2023, Lalley served her community in several capacities. She was a member of the Shelburne selectboard and previously spent 15 years as a planning commissioner. Her volunteer work has centered on enhancing community livability through thoughtful design and planning.

Education

Lalley earned a Bachelor of Arts in English from Kenyon College and a Master's degree in Landscape Architecture from the University of Virginia.

Political Experience

Following her move to Vermont, Lalley transitioned her professional focus from site design to community planning. Since 2015, she has worked as a regional planner, helping Vermont communities increase attainable housing in walkable contexts. This work aims to make more affordable, healthful, and car-lite lifestyles accessible to more Vermonters while reducing emissions and protecting water quality through improved stormwater management.

In her legislative role, Lalley has earned recognition for her environmental advocacy, achieving a perfect 100% lifetime score from Vermont Conservation Voters as of 2026.
