Biography

Kate Farrar is a Democratic and Working Families Party member of the Connecticut House of Representatives, representing the 20th District . First elected in November 2020, she assumed office on January 6, 2021, and serves as Deputy Majority Leader, with notable achievements including leading the establishment of the Early Childhood Education Endowment and securing over $10 million in local funding.

Kate Farrar brings over 20 years of experience as a nonprofit advocate and community volunteer to her legislative role. Prior to election, she served as Executive Director of the Connecticut Women’s Education and Legal Fund from 2016 to 2020, leading passage of Connecticut’s landmark Paid Family and Medical Leave Act, pay equity laws, and minimum wage increases. She previously held roles such as Vice President of Campus Leadership Programs at the American Association of University Women in Washington, D.C., expanding STEM and leadership programs for girls and college women, and Associate Director of National Programs and Policy at Wider Opportunities for Women. Earlier, she lobbied for nonprofits with Judith Blei Government Relations and coordinated for the John Kerry 2004 presidential campaign in Wisconsin. In office, she has delivered major tax cuts for working- and middle-class families and seniors, expanded health care access, and advanced equity in education and the workforce. Currently, she works as a strategy coordinator for Connecticut Foodshare addressing food insecurity and holds committee roles including Chair of the Internship Committee, Chair of the Early Childhood Education Endowment, and memberships on Finance, Revenue & Bonding; Higher Education & Employment Advancement; and Transportation.

Education and Political Experience

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Connecticut; master’s degree in public administration from Syracuse University.
