Biography
Karen Whitsett
Karen Whitsett is a Democratic state representative from Detroit, Michigan, representing the 4th House District. Born on November 8, 1967, in Detroit, she is a lifelong resident of her community, having lived in the same neighborhood for over 50 years. She is married to Jason Whitsett and has a child, Chris Jakob. As a dedicated Detroit native and community advocate, Whitsett has built her political career on a strong commitment to her constituents and union support.
Education
Whitsett graduated from Cody High School in Detroit.
Political Experience
Whitsett is currently serving her fourth term in the Michigan House of Representatives, having first been elected in 2019. Prior to entering electoral politics, she worked as a community organizer, where she championed several important causes including fighting for reduced auto insurance rates for Detroit residents and advocating for neighborhood improvement projects.
As a state representative, her legislative priorities include preventing and reforming tax foreclosure processes, protecting vital senior citizen services, and assisting entrepreneurs in securing resources for community development. She is an active member of three significant house committees: the Detroit Caucus, the Legislative Black Caucus, and the Labor Caucus. Additionally, she has helped lead efforts in Michigan and across the United States to improve education in urban communities.
Her focus throughout her tenure has centered on bringing economic opportunities to District 4 and ensuring constituents can thrive in their neighborhoods.
