Biography
Julie Marie von Haefen is a Democratic member of the North Carolina House of Representatives, representing District 36 in southern Wake County since January 2019. She unseated longtime Republican incumbent Nelson Dollar in the 2018 election with 49% of the vote and won re-election in 2020 against Kim Coley with 53.2%. A fierce advocate for public education, environmental protection, healthcare access, women's rights , and equal rights, she serves on committees including Appropriations, Appropriations-Health and Human Services, Education K-12, Ethics, Local Government, and Military/Veterans Affairs.
Education and Political Experience
- Education: Earned a bachelor’s degree from Ohio University and a law degree from Case Western Reserve University. Holds inactive law licenses in Ohio, Arizona, and California.
- Professional Background: Practiced law for over 10 years in areas including criminal law, medical malpractice defense, municipal law, and education law. Works as a substitute teacher in Wake County Public Schools, serves as a Guardian ad Litem in Wake County since 2018, and volunteers with Meals on Wheels.
- Political and Community Experience: PTA leader at school, county, and state levels; served as President of the Wake County PTA Council and on its Executive Board for five years; North Carolina PTA Board of Directors , State Advocacy Chair, and Federal Legislative Chair. Currently serving her fourth term in the 2025-2026 session.
