Biography
Julie Gonzales is a progressive Democrat representing Senate District 34 in Colorado, covering north, west, and downtown Denver, including parts of Jefferson County. Born on the San Carlos Apache reservation in Arizona and raised in south Texas as the sixth of seven children, she is the daughter of an elementary school teacher and a rancher. An organizer and community activist, she lives in Jefferson Park with her husband Ben and their dogs. Notable achievements include repealing the death penalty, codifying abortion protections, securing over $500 million for affordable housing, strengthening immigrant protections, streamlining cannabis regulations, and reducing prescription drug costs. She holds leadership roles such as Democrat Majority Whip, member of Appropriations and Finance Committees, Co-Chair of the Colorado Democratic Latino Caucus, and Parliamentarian of the Board of Latino Legislative Leaders.
Education and Political Experience
- Education: Graduated from Yale University.
- Political Experience: Began organizing at Yale in 2005, leading coalitions for affordable housing and living wages; spent 15 years advancing immigrant rights, including in-state tuition for undocumented students. Elected to the Colorado State Senate in 2018 with a record number of votes; served as Democratic Caucus Chair and Democratic Whip . Previously worked as Persuasion Field Director for Colorado Democratic Party District 6 .
