Biography
Julian Garrett is a Republican State Senator representing District 11 in the Iowa Senate. Born on November 7, 1940, in Des Moines, he was raised on a farm near Pella and now resides in southern Warren County as a retired attorney and farmer. He lives with his wife, Nancy, and they have three sons, all engineering graduates from Iowa State University. A lifelong Republican, Garrett has been involved in party activities for over 40 years, including serving twice as Ronald Reagan’s campaign chairman in Iowa's former 5th Congressional District. He is a member of the Lutheran Church , Farm Bureau, and National Rifle Association. Notable community service includes volunteering as a Little League and soccer coach for over 12 years, serving on the Indianola Little League Board, directing county tournaments, and coaching middle school mock trial teams to state competitions. He currently serves on key committees including Judiciary , Appropriations, Education, and Health and Human Services, and chairs the Justice System Appropriations Subcommittee.
Education and Political Experience
- Education: Graduated from Central College in Pella and the University of Iowa College of Law.
- Political Experience: Served 12 years as Iowa’s Assistant Attorney General in charge of Consumer Protection. Elected to the Iowa House in 2010 and re-elected in 2012 . Elected to the Iowa Senate in a special election on November 19, 2013; re-elected in 2014, 2018, and 2022 .
