Biography
Julia G. Reed is a Democratic representative for Washington's 36th Legislative District , covering northwest Seattle areas including Ballard, Queen Anne, Magnolia, Phinney Ridge, Westlake, and Greenwood. Elected in November 2022, she became the first person of color to represent the district. Notable achievements include serving as Assistant Majority Whip, founding and chairing the Democratic Maritime Caucus, and focusing on housing, postsecondary education access, workforce development, arts, creative economy, and maritime industries.
Education and Political Experience
- Education: Attended Summit K-12 and Holy Names Academy ; holds a BA from Smith College and an MPA from Princeton University’s School of Public and International Affairs.
- Political Experience: Grew up in Seattle as the Black and bi-racial daughter of public school educators. Served nearly two decades in public service, including in the Obama administration with the State Department and Office of Management and Budget on issues like the Israel-Palestine peace process and government workforce. In Seattle, worked as a senior policy advisor to the mayor, creating community college internship pipelines, redesigning youth employment systems, and reforming the Workforce Development Council. Currently consults on racial equity, workforce, and economic development. In the legislature, serves on Housing, Postsecondary Education & Workforce , Transportation , and the Joint Legislative Committee on Economic Development & International Relations.
