Biography

Judy Griffin

Judy Griffin is an American politician and author who represents the 21st Assembly District in the New York State Assembly, located in Nassau County on Long Island. She was born on September 1, 1963. As a Democrat, Griffin made history as the first woman elected to represent the district and the first majority member elected to represent Assembly District 21 since 1974.

Griffin's political career has been marked by persistence through electoral challenges. Her 2018 victory against incumbent Republican Brian F. Curran was her first run for public office. She successfully defended her seat in 2020 against Republican Patricia Canzoneri-Fitzpatrick but narrowly lost in 2022 to Curran by just 138 votes. Griffin successfully reclaimed the seat in 2024, winning the Democratic primary by a wide margin and defeating Curran in the general election.

Political Experience

Griffin served two terms in the New York State Assembly from 2019 to 2022 before losing her seat. She was re-elected on November 5, 2024, to continue representing her district.

During her tenure as Assemblywoman, Griffin established herself as a strong advocate for suburban issues. She has championed public safety, public education, environmental protection, labor unions, and law enforcement. Notable legislative achievements include passing gun safety legislation, protecting women's rights, fighting for safe staffing and prevailing wage standards, capping property taxes, and securing record school funding with first-time funding for Universal Pre-K in suburban schools. She has also advocated for increased mental health services and addressed the opioid epidemic.

Griffin's current priorities for Assembly District 21 include equitable school funding, safer neighborhoods, economic strengthening, environmental protection, inclusivity, and equal justice and rights. She aims to reform the Foundation Aid Formula to reflect Long Island's demographics and needs, increase investment in infrastructure, and enhance state aid to municipalities and schools.
