Biography

Judy May Chu, born on July 7, 1953, in Los Angeles, California, is a Democratic member of the U.S. House of Representatives, serving California's 28th Congressional District, which includes Pasadena and the west San Gabriel Valley. She made history in 2009 as the first Chinese American woman elected to Congress.

Before her tenure in Congress, Rep. Chu's public service began in 1985 on the Garvey School District Board of Education. She then served on the Monterey Park City Council, including three terms as mayor. Subsequently, she was elected to the California State Assembly and the State Board of Equalization.

In Congress, Rep. Chu has been a vocal advocate for civil rights, healthcare reform, and small business support. She played a pivotal role in passing the COVID-19 Hate Crimes Act and led efforts to secure a Congressional resolution of regret for the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882. Additionally, she collaborated with President Obama to designate the San Gabriel Mountains as a national monument and worked with President Biden to expand it.
