Biography
Juan Carrillo
Juan Carrillo is a Democratic member of the California State Assembly representing the 39th district, which encompasses Palmdale, Lake Los Angeles, Adelanto, and Victorville in Los Angeles and San Bernardino counties. He is 53 years old and was born in Mexico, immigrating to Los Angeles at age 15. He is married with four children.
Carrillo was elected to the State Assembly in November 2022, defeating Paul Marsh with 56% of the vote. He has since won reelection, securing 57.7% of the vote in the 2024 election in what is considered a Safe Democratic District.
Education
Carrillo holds a bachelor's degree from Cal Poly Pomona and a master's degree in public administration from Cal State Northridge.
Political Experience
Before his election to the State Assembly, Carrillo served for several years on the Palmdale City Council, where he was the Antelope Valley's only elected Democratic councilmember. During his tenure on the city council, he focused on expanding affordable housing, addressing homelessness, increasing green space, and supporting local small businesses during the COVID-19 pandemic recovery.
In the State Assembly, Carrillo serves as Chair of the Local Government Committee. He is also a member of numerous committees and select committees, including Health, Governmental Organization, Revenue and Taxation, Transportation, Military and Veterans Affairs, and select committees focused on housing finance and affordability, Latina inequities, California-Mexico bi-national affairs, and racism, hate, and xenophobia. During the current session, he has initiated 43 bills, with 7 passed and 29 pending.
