Biography
Juan Alanis is a Republican Assemblymember representing California's 22nd Assembly District, which includes parts of Stanislaus and Merced Counties, such as the cities of Modesto, Turlock, Ceres, Patterson, Gustine, and Newman. A lifelong resident of the district, he married his wife Barbara there and raised their three children while serving nearly three decades in law enforcement, including 27 years with the Stanislaus County Sheriff's Office, most recently as a sheriff's sergeant; he received three awards for saving lives and retired after winning his Assembly seat in 2022, defeating Jessica Self in 2024. Notable achievements include passing 16 bills into law during his first term—covering privacy for kidnapping survivors, online safeguards for minors, opioid resources, financial literacy in schools , parental notifications, sexually violent predator transparency, cargo theft prevention, youth sports safety, first responder support, law enforcement training, and agricultural protections—plus co-authoring bipartisan measures as a member of the California Problem Solvers Caucus; he is recognized as one of the Assembly's most effective bipartisan leaders. Current leadership roles include Republican Caucus Chair, Chief Minority Whip , Deputy Minority Leader for Operations , and Vice Chair of the Public Safety and Public Employment and Retirement Committees; he also serves on Agriculture, Business and Professions, Labor and Employment, Natural Resources, and Water, Parks, and Wildlife Committees, plus over a dozen select committees like Alternative Protein Innovation and Domestic Violence.
Education and Political Experience
- Education: Bachelor's degree in criminal justice and law enforcement administration from Stanislaus State University.
- Political Experience: Began public service at age 21 as a law enforcement officer; ran unsuccessfully for Stanislaus County Sheriff in 2018; elected to the California State Assembly for District 22 in 2022 , where he has initiated 40 bills this session and prioritizes public safety, reducing living costs, water rights, and agricultural/business interests.
