Biography
Joyce Mason is a Democratic member of the Illinois House of Representatives, representing the 61st district in northern Lake County, which includes all or parts of Zion, Winthrop Harbor, Beach Park, Old Mill Creek, Gurnee, and Antioch. A lifelong Illinois resident and Gurnee homeowner for over 25 years, she serves as a full-time legislator since being sworn in on January 9, 2019, after defeating Republican incumbent Sheri Jesiel in the 2018 general election. She is a mother of two, human resources consultant with SPHR and SHRM-SCP certifications, small business owner, teacher, and community volunteer. Notable positions include board member of A Safe Place Lake County Crisis Center and El Puente Latino, and service on committees such as Economic Opportunity & Equity, Elementary & Secondary Education: Curriculum and Policies, Higher Education: Appropriations, Human Services, Energy & Environment, Agriculture & Conservation, and Museums & Cultural Affairs.
Education and Political Experience
- Education: Bachelor of Arts in Communications from the University of Illinois at Chicago; Master of Business Administration from Keller Graduate School of Management.
- Political Experience: Vice President of the Woodland Community Consolidated School District 50 Board of Education for two years prior to her election; Illinois House Representative for the 61st District since January 2019.
