Biography

Senator Joy Hohn

Joy Hohn is a Republican member of the South Dakota State Senate representing District 9 in Minnehaha County, a position she has held since 2025. She is a lifelong resident of Minnehaha County and represents constituents in northwestern Sioux Falls, Hartford, and Wall Lake.

Hohn is a devoted wife, mother, and family farmer who operates a multi-generational farm with her husband Rod, her father, and her brother. The family raises corn, soybeans, cattle, and buffalo. She is also a distinguished commercial pilot. Her values are deeply rooted in faith, family, honesty, integrity, and treating others according to the Golden Rule.

Beyond farming, Hohn has demonstrated strong family commitment by caring for her elderly parents for nearly a decade to keep them on the farm. Her 104-year-old father remains active in the church, community, and the Flying Farmers organization.

Political Experience

Hohn won the Senate Republican primary in June 2024 and succeeded Senator Brent "B.R." Hoffman in District 9. She currently serves on the Senate Committee on Military and Veterans Affairs.

Her political activism has been shaped by her advocacy for property rights. Since 2016, when the Dakota Access pipeline divided her family's three-generation farm, Hohn became a vocal champion for personal property rights. She has been actively involved with Landowners for Eminent Domain Reform to raise awareness about property rights issues and has worked with citizens, municipalities, commissioners, legislators, and others across South Dakota to preserve Constitutional rights and promote local control.

Community Involvement

Hohn has been active in Minnehaha County as a student mentor, leader, and volunteer for youth organizations, children's education, and her church. Her leadership skills developed through her farm background and aviation experience have expanded through her grassroots efforts advocating for landowner rights and local governance.
