Biography
Jovan A. Jackson represents Nevada Assembly District 6, covering areas north of downtown Las Vegas and parts of North Las Vegas. Born in 1992 in Las Vegas, he attended Desert Pines High School and grew up in North Las Vegas amid gang violence, later moving to the east side. At 22, he faced a mental health crisis involving substance abuse, leading to a two-year prison sentence for conspiracy to commit robbery; during incarceration, he rehabilitated and worked as a wildfire firefighter. Believed to be the first formerly incarcerated legislator in Nevada history, he was elected in 2024, defeating Republican Nephi Oliva with 70% of the vote in the heavily Democratic district. He serves on the government affairs, health and human services, and natural resources committees, advocating for small businesses, education, healthcare access, labor rights, environmental justice, senior care, veterans, women's rights, immigrants, and the houseless. Previously, he founded a mental health business, owned a home and Mercedes, but faced setbacks including stage 3 testicular cancer; mentored by Sen. Pat Spearman , he entered politics post-release in 2018.
