Biography
Josh Williams is a Republican member of the Ohio House of Representatives, representing the 44th district . Born in 1984, he is the first Black Republican elected to the Ohio House in 50 years and the first Black majority whip in Ohio history; he currently serves as House Majority Whip in the 136th General Assembly. Notable achievements include introducing a record over 100 pieces of legislation in one General Assembly, covering issues like immigration enforcement cooperation, human trafficking penalties, photo ID for online pornography, and welfare benefits cliffs; he also sponsored bills banning drag performances near minors and making flag-planting at Ohio Stadium a felony. Williams is an attorney focused on workforce development, education, public safety, and criminal justice reform, and he is running for U.S. House in Ohio's 9th district in 2026.
Education and Political Experience
- Education: Associate's Degree in Applied Science in Paralegal Studies ; Bachelor's Degree in Paralegal Studies ; Juris Doctorate .
- Professional Experience: Criminal Defense and Personal Injury Associate at Groth and Associates ; teaches constitutional law, criminal law, and criminal procedure at Adrian College. From a background as a homeless high school dropout, he overcame challenges to become an attorney and community leader, including as Program Director, Head Football Coach, and Board Member for South Toledo Area Rec Society .
- Political Experience: Elected to Ohio House District 41 in 2022 , redistricted to 44th; re-elected in 2024; sworn in as Whip in January 2025 for 136th General Assembly.
