Joshua David Shapiro was born on June 20, 1973, in Kansas City, Missouri, and grew up in Pennsylvania. A moderate Democrat, he has built a career focused on fiscal responsibility, public safety, and defending democratic processes. As governor, notable achievements include negotiating bipartisan budgets to boost funding for public education and infrastructure despite a divided legislature, issuing executive orders to remove college degree requirements for 92% of state jobs and strengthen ethics rules, leading a rapid 12-day repair of the collapsed I-95 overpass in Philadelphia, implementing automatic voter registration, and signing laws for free preventive cancer screenings. Previously, as Attorney General , he defended Pennsylvania's 2020 election results in court, held over 90 public officials accountable, arrested thousands of drug dealers, secured $328 million in consumer relief, and sued pharmaceutical companies over the opioid crisis.
