Biography
Joseph L. Sanchez
Joseph Louis Sanchez is an American politician and member of the Democratic Party representing the 40th district in the New Mexico House of Representatives. Born in Alcalde, New Mexico, Sanchez currently resides in Española. Before entering state politics, he worked as an electrical engineer.
Education
Sanchez holds multiple degrees from New Mexico institutions:
- Bachelor of Science from the University of New Mexico
- Master of Science from the University of New Mexico
- Master of Business Administration from New Mexico State University
Political Experience
Sanchez was first elected to the New Mexico House of Representatives in 2018, serving the 40th district from January 17, 2019 to January 19, 2021. After a two-year absence from the legislature, he was re-elected in 2022, defeating his successor Roger Montoya in the Democratic primary. He has represented the district continuously since January 1, 2023.
The 40th district encompasses Colfax, Mora, Rio Arriba, San Miguel, and Taos counties in northern New Mexico. In 2020, Sanchez ran for New Mexico's 3rd congressional district seat in the United States House of Representatives but finished third in the Democratic primary on June 2.
