José Marco Serrano is a Democrat and Working Families Party member representing New York's 29th State Senate District, which includes areas such as Mott Haven, Melrose, Highbridge, Morris Heights, Spanish Harlem, Yorkville, Roosevelt Island, and parts of the Upper West Side. A lifelong South Bronx resident and son of former U.S. Congressman José E. Serrano, he has served in the New York State Senate since 2004, when he defeated 26-year incumbent Olga Mendez. Since 2019, he has been Chair of the Majority Conference and Chair of the Committee on Cultural Affairs, Tourism, Parks and Recreation. Notable achievements include sponsoring legislation for affordable housing, immigrant rights, environmental protection , tenant protections, and COVID-19 relief; he also led one of the state's most productive legislative sessions in 2019.
