Biography
José Pérez Cordero
José "Ché" Pérez Cordero is an At-Large Representative in the Puerto Rico House of Representatives, currently serving his third consecutive term. He represents the Acumulación district and is a member of the *New Progressive Party *. A vocal advocate for Puerto Rico's statehood, he regularly participates in national forums, including engagements in the U.S. Congress, to promote the island's decolonization.
Beyond his legislative work, Pérez Cordero is a lifelong athlete and surfing enthusiast. He is a former champion in judo and Olympic wrestling, and holds membership in the Gallery of Immortals of Collegiate Sports at the University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez.
Education
Pérez Cordero is a proud product of Puerto Rico's public education system. He earned a bachelor's degree in political science from the University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez and a Juris Doctor from the Pontifical Catholic University of Puerto Rico School of Law in Ponce. He is admitted to practice law and serve as a notary in Puerto Rico.
Political Experience
Before his election to the legislature in 2016, Pérez Cordero held several key government positions, including *Special Assistant at the Office of the Commissioner of Municipal Affairs * and *Legal Advisor to the Public Service Commission *. He also maintained a private legal practice prior to entering public office.
In the legislature, he serves as Chair of the Judiciary Committee and Vice Chair of the Federal Relations Committee. He promotes forward-thinking policies in areas including sports, environmental protection, consumer rights, and access to essential services. Since 2017, he has been a member of the Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Advisory Council.
