Biography
Representative Jose Alvarez
Jose Alvarez is a Democratic member of the Florida House of Representatives, representing District 46 since November 2024. He represents communities in Osceola and Orange counties.
Born on August 11, 1964, in Havana, Cuba, Alvarez immigrated to the United States in 1971 at age seven. He was raised in Miami, where he developed a strong work ethic and commitment to public service. In 1997, he relocated to Osceola County with his wife, Darlene, and their five children: Nicole Muniz, Kelly Lopez, Marfita Ogden, Krystal Johnson, and Kathy DeLeon.
Political Experience
Alvarez's public service career spans multiple roles:
HUD Regional Administrator: He led the implementation of federal housing policies and managed a workforce of over 1,100 direct and indirect reports. Under his leadership, billions of dollars were directed toward housing development, disaster recovery, and economic revitalization. He collaborated with governors, mayors, housing authorities, and nonprofit organizations to advance affordable housing initiatives and Fair Housing compliance.
Mayor of Kissimmee : During his tenure, Alvarez implemented initiatives to improve public safety, enhance infrastructure, and promote economic growth.
Kissimmee City Commissioner: He served in this role before his mayoral term.
Florida State Representative : Alvarez serves on several key legislative committees, including the Joint Committee on Public Counsel Oversight, Ways & Means, the Agriculture & Natural Resources Budget Subcommittee, the Education Administration Subcommittee, and the Human Services Subcommittee.
Professional Background
Alvarez is a real estate broker and former president of the Osceola County Association of Realtors, a position he held in 2009. His real estate background informs his advocacy for affordable housing and homeownership policies. He also worked as a supervisor for the Florida Department of Transportation early in his career.
Alvarez serves on various community and professional boards, including the Osceola County Charter Review Board, MADD , and the Florida League of Cities Transportation & Intergovernmental Relations Board.
